Houhere – Hoheria populnea
Houhere, or lacebark, is a soft-leaved native tree with delicate white flowers and fibrous inner bark. Common along forest edges and stream banks, it’s easily recognisable by its heart-shaped leaves and pale trunk. In Māori weaving practices, the inner bark of houhere was prepared to create fine, pliable lace-like fibres used for weaving.
This A4 print highlights houhere's place in Māori fibre arts.
